They say that I've ruined their childhood.
Piers Hazell doesn't just want to kill your favorite cartoon and comic characters. He wants you to experience the bloated, maggoty shamble of their rotting corpses. So what the hell is wrong with this guy? Read on.
Piers Hazell: When I go out to zombify my latest subject, I don't just draw it. I actually think about how being dead would affect them. I actually think about all of that.
For example, how would their skin go? Would they lose their hair? And how? How would they look? How would they be? Believe it or not, I actually give it a scientific viewpoint. And then the last part I work on is the eyes. The eyes are the windows to the soulless. And if you get it right, it can make them even more scary.
And the reaction that I get when people see characters that they love turned into flesh-craving undead... it really gives me a BUZZ.
I'm self taught. Visually what I see in my head just comes out on the paper. Oh, I have many influences. Lets see, Greg Nicotero: his zombie work is just... wow. Zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead and The Walking Dead. But anyone can influence me.
I usually work on more than one piece at one time. I use promarkers on Canson card which gives it a nice feel.
Flesh tones are usually cool greys or off greens. Really decay colours. Nothing too horrible. To make it scary, light and shadow alone on the image can do it without making it horrific.
I wouldn't draw stuff in bad taste. Like I wouldn't do a zombie Jesus. Not because I am religious, I just don't think that its right. I've learned that painful lesson.
You actually have to be mindful. I've upset people regarding my zombie art.
They say that I've ruined their childhood. So you do have to have a certain amount of respect for doing it and for others. But mostly people love it.
I may look a Bond villain but I'm an awesome guy. So say "Hi". I love to meet people who like my work. I'm very flattered.
Piers Hazell has probably already killed off your favorite character, but on the off chance that he hasn't, he takes requests. Visit his Twitter to view an apocalypse of damned 'toons and to speak to the dark master himself.
